SUCCESSFUL TEACHING HINTS

Practice in advance: there are some keystrokes which need to be coordinated with the script in presentation 2.

Provide "giveaways" to reinforce the message.
A.
Sunscreen manufacturers are generally happy to give you samples to give to the students.
B. UV bead bracelets or zipper pulls are very successful to show how the UV rays, which we can't see, can still be present and effect our skin. There are probably many sources for UV beads. We have used Educational Innovations at www.teachersource.com/ 1-888-912-7474 (enter "UV beads" in the search mode). If you want to try your hand at Uv bead zipper pulls, those hooks are called "lanyard hooks" and are available through crafts stores. There are many on-line sources for these, we used Bolek's in the past 1-800-743-2723 www.bolekscrafts.com.
C. UV reactive T shirts are also a real hit to give to kids. Educational Innovations has those, as do other manufacturers.

Parent information: can be attached to either the Molly Coloring Book or the Activity book. There are a number of brochures available from the American Academy of Dermatology, The Skin Cancer Foundation, and possibly the local or state dermatology society, which would be appropriate for parent education.

If you are trying to implement a sun safe hat program at your target school, make sure the teachers and staff also get them and get them in advance of whenthey are introduced to the students. If they can be introduced to the students on or about the same day as you use the program, we have found compliance to hat program and sunscreen program, to be much higher.

Please let use know your experiences regarding this program and what you have found helpful/useful as part of trying to implement sun safety awareness. Also please let us know if there are topics or suggestions as edits in the text which should be incorporated into the next version of the program.
