KIDS COOL SCHOOL PROGRAM
With the increasing incidence of skin cancer in the U.S., sun safety education (especially at the elementary school level) has become a focus for many groups, ranging from the American Academy of Dermatology, down to the "grassroots" 501c3 sun safety organizations such as ours. Although there is much excellent written educational material available, we recognize that there was no easy way for a "volunteer" sun safety educator to have an age-appropriate, ready-made presentation (with in-class material) to take into the classroom. Therefore, the Sun Safe City Program and Skin Cancer Awareness Foundation have joined forces to create the Sun Smart Kids Cool School Program. This program is composed of two age-appropriate powerpoint presentations (preK-grade 2, grade 3-6) with accompanying scripts, and downloadable classroom material. These materials, which are loosely based on the EPA's SunWise Program. have been reviewed by teachers, dermatologists and sun safety educators. Our materials are designed primarily for use by dermatologists, pediatricians, resident, nurses (including school nurses) or other professionals with background suitable to present the material. We include "road tested" suggestions for supplemental activities and for computer requirements to support the program.
We have produced and made this material available free of charge in order to promote an increase in sun safety awareness, particularly at the elementary school level. Please feel free to examine and download these materials. We would encourage you to contact us with questions, comments and to share your experiences with us. This program is listed with the American Academy Of Dermatology National Coalition For Sun Safety.
